Barbara Zimmerman

–

Roscoe, Illinois

Barbara Corrine Zimmerman, 79, born on June 17, 1945 in Rockford, IL, lived a life defined by creativity, dedication, and an abundance of love. Her journey came to a peaceful close on October 11, 2024, in her beloved home in Roscoe, Illinois, surrounded by her cherished family. Barbara, with her many talents and vast heart, left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Barbara was a woman of many facets, a thoughtful and loving mother, a dedicated wife, an adoring grandmother, and an accomplished businesswoman. She began "crafting" as a hobby that lead to a full time business. She and her husband, Jerry, were the proud owners and operators of an arts and crafts business, Dough Doodley Workshop, for 36 years, where her creative spirit found its perfect outlet. She hand crafted ornaments and plaques out of dough and Jerry would help paint, seal, and sell them at craft fairs throughout the surrounding four state area. Barb and Jerry also traveled the country with a second business, Pet I.D., where they made and sold dog tags, nylon pet leashes, and collars. They made countless friends at the many fairs and events they worked for 18 years. Barbara's passion for creativity was not confined to her business; it was weaved into the fabric of her everyday life, and she used it to enrich the lives of those around her. She had an extraordinary ability to transform the mundane into the extraordinary, a talent that was truly appreciated by her loved ones. She was a steadfast pillar of strength and love, her dedication to her family being her greatest pride and joy.

Barbara loved nature and the outdoors. She rode and cared for many horses in her younger years. Barb and Jerry would load up the horse trailer and go on trail rides with family and friends. Once the kids were born and older, they "toured the West" in their motorhome, selling their wares and visiting many national parks, marveling at the mountains, water, and scenery. Barb enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, friends, and the hoards of kids that always seemed to be around at dinnertime. She and Jerry spent countless Friday evenings watching football games, cheering on the cheerleaders, and supporting their kids at their events. Barbara even spent time with her daughter as a cheer coach at Hononegah. Barb enjoyed the family pool, frequently taking a dip to relax after the chaos of a busy day or weekend. Many hours were spent maintaining their landscape, sitting on their front deck, listening to music, the bubbling koi ponds, taking in the beauty and serenity that they created.

Barbara will be missed by her loving husband, Gerald Zimmerman, and her devoted children, Greg (Jamie) Zimmerman, Brian (Beth) Zimmerman, and Kim (Kevin) Jones. She will also be missed by her brothers, Chuck (Sunnie) McGuire and Scott (Marsha) McGuire. Her legacy will live on in her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and her inlaws, all of whom she loved dearly. A special thank you to her niece and goddaughter, Heidi Dowling, for the attention, knowledge, and care she helped provide in the final weeks. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph McGuire and Margaret "Sis" (Bob) Johnson. Despite the void her departure leaves, the memory of Barbara's warm smile, her sparkling eyes, and her undying love will forever remain in the hearts of her loved ones.

Everyone whose life was touched by Barbara Zimmerman is encouraged to share their memories and upload photos to the memorial page. Your stories and pictures will help keep Barbara’s spirit alive and celebrate the unique life she led. A special thank you to OSF Hospice and the wonderful nurses and care they provided.
