Bernice C. Henschel

Bernice C. Henschel, 99, Winnebago, IL and formerly of Dubuque, IA and Hanover, IL died at 7:05 p.m., Saturday, August 27, 2016 at Prairie View Assisted Living in Winnebago, IL.

Bernice was born November 9, 1916 in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Margaret Pauly. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School. She married Emil Henschel on January 23, 1939. They celebrated 73 years of marriage before his death on July 23, 2012. Bernice was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother, a terrific cook, gardener and seamstress. She enjoyed golfing and traveling to 49 states. She was a lover of music with a distinctive alto voice and could piano play “by ear” any known song. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dubuque, IA for many years as well as the Hanover VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include daughter Judy (Jim) Calvert, Winnebago, IL; son James (Vicki) Henschel, Santa Rosa, CA; daughter Susan Sutton, Lisle, IL; 11 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; sister Lorraine Fritz, Monticello, IA and sister-in-law Margaret Dolson, Dubuque, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Emil, daughter Barbara Podolski, granddaughter Cindy Shoenhair, son-in-law Bruce Sutton, one brother, one sister, six sisters-in-law and eight brothers-in-law.

Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 1, 2016 in St. Mary Catholic Church, 126 West Fifth Street, Pecatonica, IL with Msgr. Robert Sweeney officiating. Visitation will be held at McCorkle Funeral Home-Pecatonica Chapel, 203 West Fifth Street, Pecatonica, IL from 10:00 a.m. until time of Mass Thursday. Cremation rites will be accorded. Final resting place will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque, IA.
