Charles (Charlie) Olin Dobbs, 88, of rural Shirland Township, passed away at 11:26 a.m. September 19, 2018 at Mercy Health Hospital in Rockford, IL, after coping with the effects of Alzheimer’s/Dementia. Born July 6, 1930, in Clay City, IL, to Lowell and Zelma (Zimmerman) Dobbs, joining his older brother Bernard. Within a few years, his brothers Hubert and Donald joined the family. \r\n\r\nAs a young adult, he helped wire his parents’ house for electricity, delivered ice, and worked as a farm hand. In 1951, Charlie was drafted into the US Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean War, and served until 1953. Married Audrey Gibson in 1952, moved to Rockford IL and had two children, Connie J. and Charles L. The family purchased a farm in Shirland Township in 1966 where he resided for 52 years. He married Alyce Fosler in 1978 and they had one child, Jamie. Charlie was employed at Edwards Bakery as maintenance foreman until retirement.\r\n\r\n In retirement, Charlie became a fixture at the area auctions, developing many friendships from this hobby. He enjoyed tinkering, and caring for a variety of animals on the farm. Well known for his generous and helpful nature, and retained his sense of humor even as his illness progressed.\r\n\r\nCharlie is survived by his brother Hubert of Beloit, WI; children, Connie (Dana) Insko of Rockford, IL, Chuck (Kellijo Huff) of California, and Jamie (Elizabeth Gardner) of Minneapolis, MN; Grandchildren Dean (Jen), Chad (Angie), Amanda and Cody Insko; great grandchildren, Hannah, Cheyenne, Aurora and Hudson Insko, Alyssa and Devan Heslop; one great-great grandchild, Dawson Heslop; many nieces and nephews; good friend, Shirley Miller; and his dog Buddy, his faithful and loyal companion.\r\n\r\nPredeceased by his parents Lowell and Zelma; brothers, Bernard and Donald; sisters-in-laws, Lucille, Georgia, and Dorothy.\r\n\r\nCharlie’s Memorial Ceremony will be officiated by Pastor Tim Spickler at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at McCorkle Funeral Home-Durand Chapel 101 Main Street, Durand, IL. Visitation will be held in the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until time of Ceremony. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the family which will be designated at a later time.
