Ernest L. Burge, 77, of Roscoe, IL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at Lincolnshire Memory Care Center after a lengthy illness.
Known to family and friends as Ernie, he was born on December 29, 1947, in Hannibal, MO, to Ernest L. and Virginia (Smith) Burge. He proudly graduated from Auburn High School in 1965 and later earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Rock Valley College and Northern Illinois University.
Following his education, Ernie enlisted in the U.S. Army. He trained in radar technology and was deployed to South Korea, where he served as a chaplain’s assistant, demonstrating his deep compassion and commitment to others.
On May 22, 1971, he married his loving wife, Terry S. Payne, in Rockford, IL. Ernie built a fulfilling career at Hydro-Line in Rockford, where he worked for many years before retiring from JARP Industries in Wausau, WI.
More than anything, Ernie was a devoted father, husband, and friend. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures and was an inspiration to those around him with his positivity and genuine happiness. An avid birdwatcher, he found peace in nature, weather spotting a new species or simply taking in the beauty around him. He was also a passionate hiker who took many trips to explore the trails of the Grand Canyon, where he experienced both adventure and tranquility. He had a lifelong passion for hot rods and loved attending car shows with friends. Above all, Ernie valued time with his family, visiting his daughter and her family as often as possible and creating lasting memories with his grandchildren.
Ernie was fortunate to have many lifelong friendships and was especially grateful for his dear friend, Jeff Maney, whose kindness, humor, and loyalty meant so much to him, as well as Wendell Sagendorf, for his friendship and support.
Ernie is survived by his beloved wife Terry, devoted daughter, Sarah (Robert) McGlynn and his cherished grandchildren, Jack and Eleanor. He was predeceased by his parents.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Anderson Japanese Gardens, 318 Spring Creek Rd, Rockford, IL.
