Davis Junction, Illinois
Gary Lee Herbig, 64, left his earthly life on July 16, 2021 in his home in Davis Junction, IL. Gary fought a long battle with many illnesses and surgeries and was often referred to as a cat with nine lives.
Gary is survived by his wife, Debra Herbig (Karp); mother Marjory Herbig; daughters Lindsey (Joe) and Mary; son Paul (Ellen); stepchildren Matt, Ryan (Sara), Brent (Jandi), Donnie (Kim) and Cory; brother Brian (Connie); nephew Ryan (Samantha); niece Brandi (Tim); many cousins and special cousin Colleen Mahan.
His precious treasures left behind were his ten grandchildren, Stella, Alex, Ben, Reese, Owen, Donnie, Sydney, Khloe, Hazel and Logan.
Gary was born May 2, 1957 in Freeport, IL to Paul and Marjory (Mahan) Herbig. He graduated from Pecatonica High School in 1975. Gary tried his hands at a few trades after high school. He graduated from DeVry University in 1987 with an electrical engineering degree. He worked many years for Hewlett Packard in Arlington Heights, IL commuting every day from his home in the Rockford area. He was recently employed through Allstate Insurance as a network engineer for the past 12 years. A job that he loved and was very passionate about and was working right up until the very end.
Gary loved to tinker on cars and in his garage at home. He liked to fish especially with his buddy Rick Sedlak at the cabin, camp with the family and being Papa to the grandkids. But the most important thing in his life was his children and grandchildren. A family holiday with everyone together was something he always looked forward to. Whether it was Christmas, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, the annual camping trip or just watching the grandkids destroy the house, it always made Gary smile.
Gary was predeceased by his father Paul Herbig, baby sister, grandparents, aunts and uncles and his baby boy Matthew who died in infancy.
A very special thank you to all the wonderful staff at Northern Illinois Hospice and to Dr. Retzer.
