Ginny (Virginia) Steffan passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 12, 2024 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Determined to be with her family, whom she loved more than anything, she refused to let her illness prevent her from being the special wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt that she will forever be remembered as. A true force of nature, Virginia was an embodiment of love, spirit, and resilience.
Ginny (Hirn) Steffan, was born on August 18, 1950, in Burlington, WI, to William and Marie Hirn. On August 19, 1970, she married James (Jim) Steffan. They shared 54 years together, creating the family that she cherished more than anything. Jim and Ginny raised three children together, Lisa (Mark) Mulvain, Timothy (Rachel) Steffan, and David Steffan. Ginny loved and adored her 6 grandchildren, Tanner Steffan, Geoffrey Steffan, Devin Mulvain, Madalyn Steffan, Markayla Mulvain, and Emily Steffan. Ginny also had a special place in her heart for her niece, Cherylynn (Eugene) Salvetti, and nephew, Bill Hirn, as well as their mother, Madeleine (Cookie) Hirn. Her beloved cousins include Eldon (Barb) Schwarz, Ellen (Tom) Mirshak, and Fran (Chuck) Jeffery. The impact she has made on each of their lives is a testament to her nurturing spirit and her extraordinary capacity to love. She missed her brother, William Hirn, and the rest of her family that she is predeceased by, including her parents, William and Marie Hirn, her aunt and uncle, Frances and Eldon Schwarz, her cousin, Patty Schwarz, as well as several special family members that she married in to. Knowing that she would be reunited with her loved ones in Heaven was comforting to her.
Ginny worked as a Teacher's Assistant at Hononegah High School in Illinois. For over 20 years, she touched the lives of countless students with her kindness and encouragement. She also worked as a guard for the Lake Summerset Association. While her children were young, she was a room mother for their classes and a girl scout leader. Her compassionate and nurturing spirit also extended to several animals that she rescued and nursed back to health over the years. She was known to spoil her pets as well as the pets of her family members.
Ginny’s legacy continues to live on in the countless lives she touched and the innumerable memories she created. Ginny would do anything for the people she loved and never expected anything in return. She was fiercely independent and determined not to let cancer win and take her role of the family caretaker away from her.
As we remember and celebrate Ginny’s extraordinary life, we invite you to share your memories, stories, and photographs on the memorial page. This will serve as a living testament to the remarkable woman that Ginny was and will forever remain in our hearts
