Herbert F. Degner, 91, of Warren, IL died at 9:38 pm Tuesday September 2, 2014 in Freeport Memorial Hospital after a short illness. \r\r\n\r\r\n He was born in Ruthton, Minnesota. As the elder twin born to Richard and Adele (Beck) Degner on July 10, 1923. As a younger child he and his family did a lot of traveling to New Mexico where his Dad’s brother lived. \r\r\n\r\r\n His father died in 1927 of pneumonia, so that left his mother and his two siblings. Eventually his mother got a teaching job in Roscoe, IL and the family settled in the Northern Illinois area. He worked as a farm hand to many dairy farmers in the area around Winnebago and Pecatonica. \r\r\n\r\r\n Through one of these jobs he met his first wife Phyllis Highbarger and they married on January 20, 1951. This marriage brought three children the family. During this time Herbert built a house for his family in Pecatonica and worked for Hilbert Implement for many years. \r\r\n\r\r\n He then got divorced in 1967 and started his own construction company with his eldest brother and built many barns, barn roofs, and hog barns around Winnebago and Stephenson Counties. He also farmed outside of Pecatonica with his brothers for many years. He married Doris Fishburn Bell on December 28, 1974 and acquired a new daughter and her family. They were married for many years until her death in 2010. \r\r\n\r\r\n He enjoyed watching and hearing of his many grandchildren and great grandchildren’s sport events and all of their life’s activities. \r\r\n\r\r\n Surviving Herbert are his children: Jeanette (Steve) Loomis of Warren, IL, Richard (Lorraine) Degner of Pecatonica, IL, Laureen (Steve) Blackshear of Mayfield, KY, and Jack Schramm of Florida; 17 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren. Predeceased by parents, wife, brothers William and Robert Degner, step daughter Sharon Schramm, one great grandson Nicholas J. Schramm. \r\r\n\r\r\n Funeral ceremonies to be held at 1:00 pm Saturday September 6, 2014 in McCorkle Funeral Home – Countryman Chapel 529 Washington St. Pecatonica, IL with Pastor Bonnie Ringdahl officiating. Burial will be in Pecatonica Cemetery. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday. \r\r\n\r\r\n Memorials may be given to the Arthritis Foundation.
