Janice Schmaeng

Janice Eileen Schmaeng, 90, of Rockton, IL found peace on November 6, 2023 at Autumn Lake Healthcare Center in Beloit, WI. She was born on February 3, 1933 in La Crosse, WI the daughter of Edwin and Martha (Jacob) Hanson.

Janice married John F. Schmaeng on December 19, 1959 in Beloit, WI. They enjoyed 41 years of marriage before John passed on July 3, 2000.

Jan was a 1950 graduate of La Crosse Central High School, a 1954 graduate of La Crosse State Teacher’s College (now UW-La Crosse) earning a Bachelor’s in Elementary Education. She taught in San Bernadino and Beloit School District before taking time off to raise her four children. She returned to Rockford College for her Master’s degree in Special Education in 1975. She taught at the Beloit Turner School District for 16 years until her retirement in 1991.

Janice was a charter member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the Rockton Women’s Club and Rockton Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening, doing holiday crafts, her kitties, reading and rooting for the Packers!

She was the mother of Catherine of Sun Prairie, WI, Stephen of Rockton, IL, Lorraine (Scott) Heins of Forsyth County, GA, and David of Sun Prairie, WI. She loved her grandchildren; Julia Heins and Eric Heins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Martha Hanson, husband John F. Schmaeng and brother, Robert E. Hanson.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 25, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 511 W. Rockton Rd., Rockton, IL. A funeral ceremony will follow with Pastor Don Stein officiating. Burial will take place at Rockton Township Cemetery.
