Karen Elsie Short, 67, Shirland, Illinois, died at 4:40 p.m., Friday, April 15, 2011 in Swedish American Hospital after a sudden illness. \r\r\n\r\r\n Born October 13, 1943 in Dayton, Wisconsin, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William and Myrtle (Keehn) Fahrney. She was employed by Winnebago County Animal Services, retiring in June 2010 after 24 years of service. She loved gardening, fishing trips with her family, reeling in the big ones, caring for her pets Tank and Fluffy, spending time with her granddaughters and enjoyed traveling to the casinos. \r\r\n\r\r\n Survivors include special companion George Sly, Shirland, Illinois; son William (Darlene) Short, Beloit, Wisconsin; daughter Annie Johnson, Winnebago, Illinois, granddaughters Rachel Cox and Emily Johnson, both of Winnebago, Illinois; sisters Lorraine (Walter) Fink, Loves Park, Illinois and Carolyn (Jerry) Klassy, Belleville, Wisconsin and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. \r\r\n\r\r\n A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at McCorkle Funeral Home, 767 N Blackhawk Blvd, Rockton, Illinois. Funeral ceremonies will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at Ward Funeral Home, Evansville, Wisconsin with a visitation to be held from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at Ward Funeral Home. \r\r\n\r\r\n A memorial has been established to Winnebago County Animal Shelter.
