Rockton, Illinois
Pamela Kay Freedlund, 79, passed away unexpectedly from an aortic aneurysm on August 19, 2026, while enjoying a vacation in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Born in Rockford, Illinois, on August 26, 1946, to Rolland Wainwright and Helen Deloris (Appell) Wainwright, Pam's life centered around family, education, and community. On June 1, 1968, she married the love of her life, Lowell Freedlund. Together, they shared 58 wonderful years of a deeply loving, enduring marriage filled with laughter, partnership, and adventures.
Pam earned degrees from Hononegah High School, Northern Illinois University, and Rockford College and dedicated her professional life to shaping young minds at Rockton Elementary School. Teaching grades 1 through 4, it was her mission to teach children to read. She believed that once they possessed the power to read they could achieve anything. Her passion and excellence earned her recognition as the first teacher from Rockton named a finalist for Illinois State Teacher of the Year.
Retirement marked the start of an energetic new chapter in her life. Pam immediately transformed her community by donating the land to establish Stephen Mack Middle School and dedicated 19 years of service to the Talcott Free Library Board. A woman of boundless creativity and vitality, she cultivated beautiful gardens, painted, quilted, and crafted with effortless skill. She stayed active through workouts with Brenda Burns at the Roscoe YMCA, and she embraced dance with enthusiasm. Taking up tap in retirement and sharing ballroom and line dancing with Lowell. Although, Lowell playfully claims that only one of them had real rhythm. Her adventurous spirit carried her across the globe, from holding pandas in China to exploring ancient tombs in Egypt. Above all, her greatest joy came from her family, especially in her cherished role as a fiercely proud grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Wainwright.
Pam's spirit lives on through her devoted husband, Lowell; her sons, David (Dana) Freedlund and Daniel (Keli) Freedlund; and her beloved grandchildren, Mary (Charles) Meyers, Matthew, Carter, and Callie.
Services will remain private for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers or food, memorial contributions may be directed to a favorite local grade school or food pantry.
