Walter S. Barankiewicz, 79, of Durand, Illinois after an ongoing battle with illness is now at peace. Walter passed away Saturday evening, March 15, 2014 with his wife at his side. \r\r\n\r\r\n He was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Walter J. and Lillian (Wojtaszek) Barankiewicz on November 9, 1934. Upon graduating High School, Walter enlisted into the army with his best friend Phil Banez. They were stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion.Walter married Carole Torchia on January 7, 1967. He worked in HVAC for Abbott Laboratories for 33 years. Walter was a member of St. Mary/ St. Patrick Catholic church in Durand, where he enjoyed spending time with his church family. He loved fishing, gardening, bowling, playing cards and shooting both craps and gophers. He was a collector of stamps, coins, and beer steins. Walter and Carole enjoyed traveling and spoiling their grandchildren. Walter will always be remembered for his sense of humor, words of wisdom, unfiltered opinions, and cunning sayings. \r\r\n\r\r\n He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carole; three daughters, Wendy (Jim) Bates, Terry Polizzi, and Tracy (Shawn) Cruse. Walter is also survived by his nine grandchildren; Jessica and Megan Bates; Aaron (Ashley) Polizzi, Amanda, Stephen, and Anthony Polizzi; Angelina, Tessa, and Zachary Cruse and one sister, Josephine Kolner. \r\r\n\r\r\n Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 22, 2014 in St. Mary Catholic Church, \r\r\n\r\r\n 602 West Main Street, Durand, Illinois with Msgr. Eric Barr officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Durand, Illinois. Visitation will be held at McCorkle Funeral Home, 101 Main Street from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 21 with a scripture service to be held at 7:30, and again from 9:00 – 9:30 a.m., Saturday, March 22 with a prayer service to be held at 9:30 at the funeral home.
