social security benefits

Following the passing of a loved one, prompt notification to the Social Security Administration (SSA) is crucial. Our team will handle the necessary paperwork and notify the SSA on your behalf. Additionally, you may be entitled to specific benefits, which we encourage you to explore and understand your eligibility for.

Survivor Benefits

Survivor benefits are typically paid to an eligible surviving spouse, who must be at least 60 years old (or 50 if disabled) at the time of the loved one's passing. The payment amount varies based on age, ranging from 71.5% to 100% of the deceased's entitled benefit.

If the surviving spouse is caring for a child under 16 or a disabled child of the deceased, the age requirement is waived, and the payment is 75% of the eligible benefit amount.

Other Survivor Benefits

Additional groups may be eligible for survivor benefits, including:

  • Minor and Disabled Children: Unmarried children under 18 (or up to 19 and 2 months if still in high school full-time) and children with a disability onset before age 22 may qualify. Grandchildren and stepchildren may also be eligible, receiving 75% of the deceased's benefit amount.
  • Parents: Parents aged 62 or older who were financially dependent on their deceased child may receive survivor benefits, with payment amounts of 82.5% (single parent) or 75% (two parents) of the deceased's benefit.
  • Ex-Spouses: Former spouses who were married for 10 years or more may also collect survivor benefits.

Lump-Sum Death Payment

A one-time lump-sum death payment of $255 is available to a surviving spouse who was either living with the deceased at the time of passing or receiving benefits based on the deceased's Social Security record for the month of death, even if they were living apart. If there is no surviving spouse, this payment can be made to an eligible surviving child who was receiving benefits for the month of death.
